the end of an era...

Last night was the final episode of ER. It was truly the end of an era as it's been on since I was 9 years old! I don't watch much television, in fact, I don't even have one in my apartment...but I do love ER...

I like to joke that out of everything that I know as a nurse = 1/3 of it I learned as a nursing assistant + 1/3 of it I've learned in my current job as a nurse + 1/3 of it I've learned from ER! But, it's probably not far from the truth... I simply learn things better when they're part of a story, whether it's that of a real-life patient or one on a television show! Once, instead of studying for my OB final in nursing school, I watched the ER episode "Love's Labor Lost" and got an A on the test.

But, even more than the medical knowledge that it's given me and my enjoyment of the show itself, I love ER because of what it's come to mean - that is, Thursday nights with the Polzins/Martindales. Because of ER, Jenna and I (and various others who have joined us throughout the years) have spent almost every Thursday together for the last 7 years, watching our show. So you can see why last night was so sad...Thursday nights will continue of course, at least until I leave for Mexico, but they won't ever be quite the same again without our friends from Cook County General...
